Mamond was formed by Far Out Recording’s producer of the time, Roc Hunter, Ivan Conti of Azymuth and Joe Davis, founder of Far Out Recordings. On a trip to Rio armed with his laptop Roc Hunter and Joe Davis got together some of the finest musicians in Rio, many were great friends, to produce a monster album dedicated to the dance floors ‘Paradise.’
Ivan Conti played a key role in co-ordinating many of the songs and arrangements for the album. All the material was laid down during intensive recording sessions in Copacabana and took almost a year to complete. The record was a merging of musical cultures, styles and productions, firmly keeping it Brazilian roots alive; it was a celebration of the music from Rio de Janeiro infusing Electronica, Samba Funk and Psychedelics.
This diverse album includes the afro-centric hit ‘Que Coisa So’ in which Roc used existing members of Banda Black Rio (Rio’s legendary funk group of the 70’s) on horns and King Salsa on percussion (Brazil’s only salsa orchestra.) The vibe of the track was taken from the horn sections melody which is based on Gafieira, combined with Afro-Latin percussion and topped with great beats for the dance floor. Also featured on the B-side of the track were three percussion based mixes guaranteed to give the DJ pressure on the decks. Many tracks on the album featured fresh talents like the ethereal vocals of Gabriella Geluda on title track ‘Paradise’ and ‘Noite De Verao’ and Cidinho Moreira on percussion. It was a really well received project and concept.
The track ‘Pregiciman’ has been featured on many top Brazilian compilations over the years. The record is destined to become a lost classic and was a one off. Recently Madlib had made a similar record and concept with Mr. Ivan Conti, but this Mamond recording was the first of its style, discretely released back in 2002.
