‘I could listen to the Cravo e Canela LP forever.’ Yoshi Okino (Kyoto Jazz Massive)
‘O Cravo’ is a new project from 2005, from Far Out inspired by the funky samba soul sound of 70s Brazil.
On a recording trip to Brazil, Fabiola was invited to go back into the studio by Joe Davis and Ivan Conti from Azymuth. Featured on the record are Alex Malheiros, Sabrina Malheiros, Robertinho Silva & Fernando Moraes. Joe says: “We got in some of the best players in the studio who would be able to replicate the sound from the Cravo e Canela record and we cut four tracks produced by me and Dave Brinkworth aka Harmonic 33’. There were 4 tracks cut but till now (2010) only 1 has been released.
On the flipsdie of that ‘Mundafunker’, Bugz in the Attic’s main man Daz I Kue cut up ‘Mundafunka’ into a stuttering broken boogie beat juggernaut. Says Daz: ‘ I had to do this for Far Out, I heard the tune and flipped out, it was like an amazing slice of 70s Brazilian Boogie Funk, I have played this tune out and it smashes up the dance floor’.
Fabiola’s influences include The Beatles, Herbie Hancock, Banda Black Rio, Milton Nascimento & classic Brazilian bossa nova. She has sung with the best in Brazil including Osmar Milito, Milton Nascemto, Tom Jobim and Azymuth as well as having released several solo albums. ‘Mundafunka’ was particularly inspired by Fabiola’s ‘Cravo e Canela’ album from 1975 which Joe Davis of Far Out considers one of the best cult recordings from Brazil fro sambas. The record was fetching £1000,s at one stage, not suprising as it is so rare and unlike most collectable rare records, the music through out the record is fantastic. The original has since been reissued and bootlegged countless times.
Expect another slice of Brazilian Funk coming from these sessions – ‘E Canela’ – (get it? Cravo E Canela’) coming one day on Far Out Recordings.
