Garrincha is a true Brazilian legend, one of the all-time great footballers, revered to this day. Focusing on his zenith, from 1953 to 1962 – during which time he twice inspired Brazil to World Cup glory – this soundtrack is suitably of the period. With beautiful Ipanemas-esque soulful samba sitting alongside carnival batucada, darker cinematic experimentalism, and playful jazz funk, this collection of Leo Gandelman scores mirrors and celebrates Garrincha’s amazingly fast paced life; at times glorious, at others a car crash. Garrincha remains so popular in Brazil that he is remembered as Joy of the People.
Old school samba songs split this soundtrack (performed by the Brazilian Saxambistas and in the vein of the Ipanemas) with the most evocative Latin music. The majority was composed especially for ‘Estrela Solitaria’ by Gandelman who captured Garrincha’s personality perfectly. Moving from quirky jazz funk, to heavy batucada samba, and dark, almost psychedelic jazz. ‘Estrela Solitaria’ ends with ‘Abertura’, remembering Garrincha in his glorious prime: “Thank you, Garrincha, for having lived.”
Garrincha is Brazilian football, samba the symbol of the nation’s music. ‘Lonely Star’ is the ultimate tribute to both, continuing Far Out’s love affair with Futebol.
